My Favorite Way to Shoot

Blind shooting. Just hold the camera down in front of your subject and shoot, hope you get something. Invariably, I always do. Have gotten some of my most favorite shots this way. Especially of my silly girl, Kyla.

The sun has come. She is happy.

At first I was disappointed this next series was out of focus. Then I took another look. Maybe she should be out of focus.

I have no words.

Fun in the Sun

I need more practice shooting in the direct sunlight – Kyla was only happy to oblige.

She is a sun worshipper.

In front of Kyla (and behind me) is our house with white french doors and a light colored umbrella on the patio.

The sun bounced off the doors and umbrella to help illuminate Kyla, but I also used the on-camera flash as a fill.

Post-processing included warming up the image a little and some increasing of blacks, contrast and sharpening.

Ice Flair

We all love sun flair, but how about when the sun is reflecting off the ice and snow?

This is what it looked like in front of our french doors last week when it was icy. You almost needed sunglasses inside the kitchen it was so bright.

I like the ice flair in the image, and how Kyla’s eye is still clear, and the fact that she’s actually looking at the camera. That’s rare when she’s in this position, which is a lot. She’s pretty lazy.

I know Kyla has been dominating the blog lately, but clients are slow for me now. Not that I mind. Hopefully when the weather gets better I will concentrate on attaining more business.

In the meantime, I hope Kyla and my random ramblings are enough to keep you coming back!

In the Warm Sun

Friday, it was about 75 degrees.
Yesterday – hovered around a freezing 32 all day.
Today – about 60.

It’s January. It’s Oklahoma.

Tree Light

I’ve decided that Kyla is a second-time-around poser.
Never fails. The first time I try to get some shots of her, they never work out.
She’s too squirmy and just wants to stick her nose about an inch from mine.

I think she knows. I think she knows that after I murmur to myself, “I give up. Why even try?”
She knows it’s time to move into model mode. Reluctantly, I always try a second round of shots. And invariably, I get the shot I wanted in the first place.

The second-time-around poser. Gotta love her.

What’s with those eyes?

Fall Leaves

One of my impromptu photography moments.

I was just walking by the open back door and noticed the beautiful stormy November light.

Then I walked around the side of the house to throw away some trash, and found this odd configuration of leaves on the ground. I did not stage this.

Pocket of Light

I turned the corner in the kitchen and there Kyla was, sitting on the back patio in a pocket of light.

I had to shoot through the screen door, otherwise she would have moved at the first sound of me opening it.

Not the greatest photo in the world, but I think it’s pretty.
