Patches

…is healing great!

That’s what I call her now that she’s graduated from wearing a t-shirt.

Patches.

She has a lot of shaved places (about 8-9) and I never knew how thick her coat actually was until now.

Out of Jail

Sometimes she gets out of Cone Jail.

That’s what we call it when I take off her cone that stops her from licking her wounds.

She loves to get out of Cone Jail.

Still Rest

Kyla and I want to say thank you to everyone who has commented and wished her well. She is still on the road to recovery, but seems to be doing even better each day. She even got her drains removed Thursday, and stitches are soon to follow.

I take her big cone off while I’m here with her so she can feel the wind on her neck, she seems to enjoy that.

Her wounds are healing nicely, I think, and I see more of her old happy self more and more. She even play-bowed this morning with the neighbor dogs and had a quickness to her step.

Rest is what she needs most, and she gets plenty of it. She’s so lazy anyway, so it comes naturally to her. Here she is enjoying some still rest after taking a walk around the backyard.

Please excuse the dusty, hairy floors. This week, cleaning has not exactly been a priority.

Road to Recovery

Kyla and I thank all those who have wished her well. She is on the slow road to recovery and doing a little better each day. It breaks my heart to look at her and know what she went through. I can’t get the images from the attack out of my mind, it was like slow motion and there was nothing I could do.

I beg of all dog owners, no matter what the breed, no matter how sweet and friendly your dog is, please be aware of where your dogs are and keep them on a leash when outside. You never know when something like this might happen.

Here’s a photo of Kyla resting on her bankie. She’s wearing a t-shirt to help with the dripping drains.

Sunday

It was a pretty normal Sunday. Dad came over to do some work on the bathroom. I had some narratives to write for school. Then a few errands and lunch. Then I made a decision that I regret, but how could I have known?
I decided to take Kyla on a walk. We trotted down the driveway, to the street and off we went on our usual routine.
Then Kyla turned her head. I heard pawprints coming toward us. THEN I saw them.
Two pit bulls.
They jogged over to Kyla with a purpose, you could just tell.
Kyla defended herself fairly well, but that’s all she had a chance for, defense.
One of the pits wouldn’t let up. I know enough not to stick my hand or arm in between a fight, so I tried kicking and pushing the dog off her. Didn’t work. Vinegar spray – didn’t work.
Nothing worked. For about five whole minutes. Nothing worked.
I just had to watch as my Kyla was being bitten and attacked, helplessly.
Finally neighbors came out with sticks. Didn’t work.
Another finally, the owner came out and grabbed the pit by the collar. I didn’t know he was the owner, so I thanked him profusely.
Then we saw the little blood spots all over the ground, all over Kyla. Nothing on the pit.
The owner was very apologetic. Couldn’t believe his dog would do something like that. He has it around kids all the time.
I wouldn’t.
At least he paid for the emergency vet bill. And I’m getting ready to call Animal Welfare to report it.
Kyla is doing OK. She has several wounds and seven drains. She looks terrible.

Kyla would love it if all her blog fans would send her lots of lovey thoughts. I know it will make her heart smile.

Mama

I got news this morning that Mama, a beautiful brindle pit bull, has passed on to the Rainbow Bridge. She was so energetic and happy during our shoot. She is one of the ones you just don’t forget. My prayers are with her family.

Here are some of her shots, and some with her friend, Zeplynn, the white girl.
